Period Pressure Points

Press

For several weeks, students and university staff are mobilizing to seek the repeal of Pécresse Law on "freedoms and responsibilities of universities." This law regulates the dismantling of public services of higher education and prepare it for privatization.

Today Tuesday, October 30, 2007 when a filtering device was put in place to inform all users of the University to hold a general meeting, some members of the presidency have attacked the Students who were disseminating leaflets. While things went peacefully, this attitude of the presidency appears to be an unacceptable provocation. Following this altercation, the Presidency has decided to unilaterally the administrative closure of the site Schuman of the University of Provence until Monday, November 5.

Despite this maneuver, which was aimed at preventing students to meet in General Assembly (GA), it has been held, bringing together nearly one thousand students. Students have a huge majority reaffirmed their determination to see this law repealed. This General Assembly has called a massive reinvestment in the state of higher education and supports the struggle of workers in defense of public service. In this sense, the GA calls to join the strike and protests planned for November 20. A demonstration involving between 250 and 300 students was then held in the streets of Aix-en-Provence.

We call on all students and university staff to continue and expand the mobilization until the repeal of the Act and Pécresse to meet in general assembly on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 12:30 pm in the Great Hall of the college of letters from Aix en Provence.
